The question is not “are there chargers in Newfoundland” — there are, and NL Hydro’s fast-charging network has run since 2021. The question a driver actually has is narrower: on the drive I am about to make, where are they, how long is the longest stretch with none, and is there one where I end up? That is a measurement, so we made it.

Every route page now carries a “Doing it electric” block. It is built from NL Hydro’s published network map — thirty fast-charging sites on the island, exported from the map itself, not typed in — laid against the same driven line every other number on that page comes from. A site counts as “on the drive” when it sits within 3 km of the road; its km marker is read along the route; the nearest site to the destination is chosen by road, not as the crow flies, and priced by the same routing engine that prices the drives. Six sites NL Hydro lists as coming in 2026 are shown where they fall and counted nowhere.

What the block does not do is promise. A charger listed here is one NL Hydro publishes; whether it is free or working the morning you need it is the ChargePoint app’s to tell you. And the thirty sites are fast chargers only: the Level 2 plugs at hotels and town halls exist, but the open map carries them untagged, so they are a contributor ask, not a count.

The amber dots on the homepage map are these, at these coordinates — a dot at Goobies or Roddickton is a highway-stop charger, not a stray pin. Navigate to any of them from your own app.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fast charger at the airport?＋

Near both. NL Hydro's Gander site is on the Trans-Canada Highway about 3 km along the drive from the YQX terminal door, and its Deer Lake site is on the highway about 4 km from the YDF door — each is the first entry in every route's electric block. NL Hydro also lists ultra-fast sites coming in 2026 at Gander and at Deer Lake's Airport Road; they are shown on the routes they touch and counted toward nothing until they open.

Which routes are easiest electric?＋

Read the table: it is sorted by the longest stretch without a fast charger. The short western drives — Marble Mountain, Corner Brook, Woody Point — and Lewisporte from Gander have gaps under 60 km. The south coast is the other end: Harbour Breton, Hermitage and St. Alban's run more than 230 km from the last charger with none at the destination, and the nearest by road is Bishop's Falls, back the way you came.

What plugs are these?＋

NL Hydro lists its 62.5 kW chargers with CCS and CHAdeMO plugs, on a ChargePoint account. Its page does not mention NACS or Tesla adapters, so neither do we — check your own car's adapter situation against the network's page before you count on it.

Why don't you count Level 2 chargers in towns?＋

Because the open map can't tell them apart from fast chargers yet. OpenStreetMap has 94 charging-station pins on the island and all but one carry no operator, network or socket tags — a wall plug and a fast charger look identical. NL Hydro's published list is the only fast-charging network a public authority prints, so it leads, and OSM cross-checks it. Tag the pins and the layer can grow; the ask is on the contribute page.

Does the 'longest stretch' mean I can't make it?＋

No — it means how far you must carry. A 205 km gap on the La Scie drive is fine for a car that left Deer Lake full and comfortable at 300 km of range in summer; NL Hydro's own page says cold, hills and heating cut range, and this island supplies all three. The number is there so you decide with it, not so we decide for you.
