Method

How we measure

Every distance and climb on this site was measured by us from open data, and every page says when. Here is how, in one place.

Distances, and why there are no drive times

Every distance is measured by road with OSRM, the open-source router, from a fixed point at the terminal entrance to the destination. Not from the town centre, and not as the crow flies.

We don't publish drive times. How long a drive takes depends on the day: weather, roadwork, traffic, the ferry queue. Your maps app sees those and we can't, so every drive here links to it for the time.

In the planner you set how far you want to drive in a day. Plan to be off the road by dusk: the province says a moose collision is twice as likely to injure between dusk and dawn.

The drive back

Measured the same day, with the same router and the same door point as the drive out. When the two distances differ, it is the road, not the method.

Stops on the way

Every stop is pinned to one OpenStreetMap element, linked on the page, and every figure about it is read from that element. The detour figure is the extra distance it adds to the drive, measured by road.

An old "last edited" date only means nobody has updated the map. It is not proof a place has closed. If you know better, fix it on OpenStreetMap and every app that reads the map, this one included, gets the fix.

Places to eat

Everything the open map data (OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps) records near the drive, in the order you pass it. No stars, no prices, no opening hours, and nobody can pay to appear or to rank higher.

It is never "all of them". A place that is not mapped does not appear, and a place that closed stays until someone removes it.

"Unconfirmed" means only one source records it, so we will not pin it on a map or offer directions to it until a second source agrees on where it is.

EV chargers

NL Hydro's fast-charging network only (62.5 kW DC, CCS and CHAdeMO), counting sites within 3 km of the measured drive. Level 2 chargers in towns are not counted. Whether one is working right now is the charging app's to say.

Trails

Length comes from the trail as mapped on OpenStreetMap. Climb comes from terrain elevation data, sampled about every 30 m, ignoring rises under 3 m so map noise does not count as climbing.

The drive is measured to the trailhead itself, not to the nearest town.

Each trail's type uses hikers' words. A loop brings you back to the start without retracing. An out and back goes to an end and comes back the same way. A point to point has a trailhead at each end, so you need a lift or a walk back. A lollipop goes out along a stem, round a loop and back down the stem. The type comes from the park, town or trail guide named on the trail's page, quoted. A map line can show whether the ends meet, but not whether a road waits at the far end, so where nobody says, the page says the type is not confirmed.

Easy, moderate, challenging or strenuous is worked out, not judged: the whole walk's length (twice the path on an out and back, once round a loop, one way on a point to point) plus every metre of climbing counted as 8 m of flat walking. Under 6 km of that is easy, under 12 moderate, under 20 challenging. A path that climbs more than 100 m per kilometre is never rated easy or moderate, however short.

What we link instead of copying

Ferry sailings, opening hours, fares, check-in times and road conditions change, and they belong to the people who run them. We link to their page and never copy the figure, so it cannot go stale here.

Dates and the fine print

Every figure carries the date it was measured. Everything here is for planning only. It is not live, not for navigation, and conditions change, so check official sources on the day.
