Contribute a photograph

This site is built on measurements — drive times, coordinates, road numbers, each with a source and the date it was checked. The one thing we cannot measure our way to is a photograph, and there is a specific gap we would like help with.

The gap, specifically

An iceberg photographed alone against open water could be five metres tall or fifty. The famous ones are enormous, and a picture that does not show that is a postcard rather than information.

We checked the two Wikimedia Commons categories for Newfoundland icebergs: 122 photographs, of which 14 are geotagged inside this region, and not one of those contains a scale reference — no boat, no house, no person, nothing that tells you how big the thing is. The single freely licensed photograph we could find that does convey scale was taken in St. John's, which is not this coast.

So: a boat beside a berg. A berg past a headland with houses on it. Anything with something in the frame whose size a stranger already knows. That is the picture we cannot get, and someone on a tour boat with a phone can take it in an afternoon.

A road as it actually is — the causeways in weather, Route 410 with nothing on it, the queue at Farewell.
A place we describe but cannot show: the wharf, the trailhead, the lighthouse, the ferry deck.
Corrections. If something on this site is wrong about where you live, that is worth more to us than any photograph. We publish what we can check; you can check things we cannot.

One thing we are stuck on: the beaches

We swept every route on this site for named beaches and found four near enough to be worth a short detour — Back Harbour Beach andGreat French Beach near Twillingate, Sandy Beach near La Scie, and Eastport Beach in Bonavista Bay.

We have not published any of them, because the map that names them records only a name and a position. It does not say whether a road reaches the beach, whether there is anywhere to leave a car, or whether the last few hundred metres are a walk. Sending a stranger nine minutes off their drive to find out is not something we are willing to do on a guess.

If you have been to one: can you drive to it, is there somewhere to park, and how far is the walk? Three sentences settles it, and settles it better than any dataset we can buy.

What you get

Your name on the picture, wherever it appears, with a link to your own site or profile if you want one. That is enforced by the software rather than by good intentions: a photograph physically cannot be published here without a credit, a licence and a link to its source — the build fails if any of the three is missing.

You keep the copyright. We are asking for permission to use the picture, not for you to give it away, and you can go on selling or licensing it to anyone else.

How to send one

The better way: Wikimedia Commons

Upload it toWikimedia Commonsunder CC BY 4.0 or CC BY-SA 4.0, add the location, and send us the link. The licence is then unambiguous and public, the provenance does not depend on either of us remembering an email, and the picture stays useful to everyone long after this site is gone. It takes about ten minutes the first time.

The easier way: email it

Send the file toour photo addresswith where and roughly when it was taken, the name you want credited, and this sentence in the message:

I took the attached photograph and I own the copyright. I licence it under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0), which lets anyone use it with credit to me. I would like to be credited as[your name].

That wording matters and it is short on purpose. A verbal "sure, use it" is not a licence, and we have seen what happens when a photograph's permission turns out to cover less ground than everyone assumed. If you would rather grant something narrower than CC BY, say so and we will talk — we would just rather have it written down than guessed at.

What we will not do

Use a photograph without the credit attached to it.
Pass it to anyone else, sell it, or fold it into a stock library.
Publish it somewhere it implies a place it was not taken. Every picture here is captioned with where it is.
Recommend your business in exchange for a picture. The site does not recommend operators, and a photo credit is a credit, not an endorsement.

If a photograph is already published here and you want it removed or the credit changed, emailthe same addressand it will come down. No argument, no form.
