Conservative model estimate, Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF) to Marble Mountain Base Lodge — no stops, dry roads. Many of Newfoundland's provincial routes carry no speed limit in the open map data, so the router assumes a slow default: a driver who knows the road will beat this. The terminal side — parking, arrivals, ground transport — is the airport's own information: Deer Lake Regional Airport →

This is the route that makes Deer Lake’s case in one line: land, collect your bags, and be at the bottom of a chairlift 39 minutes later. The whole drive is a single road — the Trans-Canada — running along the lake the town is named for and then down the Humber Valley, with the ski hill rising straight off the highway’s shoulder at Steady Brook. There is no navigation to speak of; the mountain finds you.

What the mountain offers is its own story to tell: skimarble.com claims over 536 metres of vertical, the highest in Atlantic Canada by the resort’s own account, across 43 runs. We quote that rather than repeat it as fact, the same way we treat every operator’s numbers — the figures we will stand behind are the road’s: 47.3 km, measured door to lodge. One gap worth noting for OpenStreetMap contributors: the map records a Falls View Road at Steady Brook but no waterfall behind it. If you hike to one, map it — this page will cite the element the day it exists.

Cross-country skiers are on the same highway: OpenStreetMap maps a groomed nordic trail network — classic and skating lanes, with named trails like Bog Slog and Sleepy Hollow (way/464759577, piste:type=nordic) — in the hills a few minutes further west, past Steady Brook toward Corner Brook. The park is Blow Me Down Cross Country Ski Park, and its Main Lodge is mapped (way/464926853) — the Corner Brook route carries it as a measured stop, 37 mapped kilometres of nordic trail and a biathlon range included.

Worth stopping for

  1. Deer Lake visitor centre

Right where the airport road meets the Trans-Canada, before you have committed to a direction. If you want a paper map or a person to ask, this is the last easy chance.

Stopping here adds about 0 min and 0 km to the drive.

navigate: Organic · OsmAnd · Apple · Google · Waze
  2. Newfoundland Insectarium

A museum whose name states its whole offer, minutes from the terminal. Mapped as a museum in OpenStreetMap; hours are its own business, so check before detouring with kids in the car.

Stopping here adds about 3 min and 1.9 km to the drive.

navigate: Organic · OsmAnd · Apple · Google · Waze
  3. Joe Butts Lookout

A mapped viewpoint just off the highway at the Deer Lake end — the cheapest look you will get at the country you are about to drive into.

Stopping here adds about 3 min and 1.6 km to the drive.

navigate: Organic · OsmAnd · Apple · Google · Waze
  4. Pasadena's beach on Deer LakeDetour

OpenStreetMap draws the sand but records no name for it: a lakefront beach on Deer Lake at Pasadena, halfway along the drive. The summer counterweight to this route's winter reason.

Stopping here adds about 11 min and 3.1 km to the drive.

What this is not

  • Not how many there are. A report means somebody looked, saw and wrote it down. A busy harbour with tour boats reports more than an empty coast with the same animals in it.
  • Not a sighting you are promised. Nothing here says you will see one.
  • Not complete. Only species we ask GBIF about appear, and only where somebody reported them.

Why it matters: Hertz Canada’s published rental terms — the one set of Canadian rental terms we could read in full, quoted not recommended — list “use off paved roads or on roads which are not regularly maintained” as misconduct that voids the damage waiver. Read the agreement you sign before leaving the lot. The terms themselves. Source for these figures: OSRM driving profile, stored route query, with node annotations; OpenStreetMap surface tags via Overpass, checked 2026-09-06. A road with no tag is unknown, not paved; what any road is like today is on 511.

Eating on the way — measured, not recommended

15 places to eat that the open map data records within 2 km of this drive, in the order you would pass them. No stars, no prices, no opinions, and no opening hours — distance along the road is the one thing measured here that a directory cannot give you.

The longest stretch with nothing mapped on it is 21.5 km — after Langers, until Oasis Grill House. That is the figure worth planning around.

What this list is not

  • Not a recommendation. Nothing here is endorsed, reviewed or rated. It is in the order you drive past it.
  • Not complete. Somewhere unmapped does not appear. This is never "all of them".
  • Not open hours. We publish none, because the open data holds none. Never assume a kitchen is serving.
  • Not necessarily still trading. A place that closed stays in the data until somebody removes it.
  • Not for sale. No one can pay to appear here, to rank higher, or to have a rival removed.

Open map data is incomplete — somewhere unmapped does not appear here, and this is never "all of them" or "the good ones". A place that closed is also still on the map until somebody removes it, which is why no hours are shown and nothing here says a kitchen is open. Before you go

  • Ski seasonWinter — the exact dates are the mountain's call

  • Road conditionsYear round, matters most November–April

This is a winter route by purpose, driven in exactly the months the Trans-Canada earns its plow fleet. Check the provincial cameras before leaving the terminal — the Humber Valley stretch gets weather the airport does not.

  • MooseYear round, worst between dusk and dawn

The province states that the likelihood of injury in a moose collision is twice as high between dusk and dawn as in daytime. Short winter days put ordinary après-ski drives into exactly that window.

Arriving without a car

Every distance and time on this page is a drive. If you are not renting, here is what Deer Lake Regional Airport lists at this door — operators and numbers, not fares: a tariff is theirs to change, so it is linked and not copied.

No rideshare here.

No rideshare service is named anywhere on the airport's ground-transportation page, which instead lists three taxi firms, a shuttle and seven charter operators. Read off the page on 2026-09-15.

  • Taxi

Star Taxi, which the airport calls its primary ground transportation provider, serving the whole region with wheelchair-accessible vans and accommodating service dogs. The airport advises contacting them 24 to 48 hours before you arrive, which is the single most useful sentence on that page.

  • Taxi

Deer Lake Taxi, listed as operating around the clock across the province with no pre-booking required.

    (709) 635-0000

  • Shuttle

Star Taxi runs a shuttle between Corner Brook and the airport, serving named hotels, with a private-car option. It must be booked ahead. The per-person and private fares are the airport's to publish.

Questions people actually ask

Should I fly into Deer Lake or Gander for Marble Mountain?

Deer Lake, and it is not close: 39 minutes against about 4h27 from Gander. This is the shortest headline drive on this site — the hill is nearer to the YDF terminal than most towns are to their own airports.

Can I ski the day I land?

The drive will not stop you — 47 km, 39 minutes, one highway. Whether the lifts are still turning when you land is the mountain's decision, not ours: their site carries the day's hours and conditions, and this page deliberately does not.

What is the drive actually like?

One road the whole way: the Trans-Canada southwest from the airport junction, along Deer Lake itself past Pasadena, then down the Humber Valley until the hill appears at Steady Brook. The base lodge is one turn off the highway.

What does the mountain itself claim?

The resort's own site states over 536 metres of vertical — the highest drop in Atlantic Canada, by its own account — across 43 runs. Those are Marble's numbers, quoted from skimarble.com, not measurements of ours; the only figures we measured are the road ones above.
