1. YYT → Salmonier Nature Park →

   The drive runs along this park's mapped boundary on the way past, but the park reaches well inland from the road. ParksNL calls Butter Pot one of the most popular provincial parks in Newfoundland and Labrador; its own page puts the ponds first, with places to swim, fish and paddle, sandy swimming beaches, a campground, a trail system, and a view over the park's water from the top of Butter Pot Hill. A place to spend time in, in other words, rather than a pause on the way through.

   Stopping here adds about 26 min and 6.3 km to that drive (57 min door to door).

2. YYT → Clarenville →

   A short way off the Trans-Canada on the way out of the metro area. ParksNL's own page for the park names the trails: Pegwood Pond Trail and Peters Pond Trail each run to Pegwood Junction, and from there the hike continues to the summit of Butter Pot Hill. A short walk in on Pegwood Pond Trail reaches The Lookout, with a view over the park and the hill. Campsites sit in forested loops a short walk from Big Otter Pond, Peter's Pond or both; ParksNL names two sandy swimming areas, one in the day-use area and one on Big Otter Pond, and puts canoeing and kayaking on Big Otter Pond, the largest in the park. It keeps a season rather than year-round hours, so the dates are ParksNL's to state, not this page's.
