Then a ferry to Change Islands

Not every Fogo-bound boat stops here. The province publishes separate schedules for separate vessels, and some Farewell–Fogo sailings go straight to Fogo. Find a sailing that stops here in the current schedule before you plan around it.

Operated by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

  1. Stop 1: Butter Pot Provincial ParkDetour

The drive runs along this park's boundary, but the park reaches well inland. ParksNL calls Butter Pot one of the most popular provincial parks in Newfoundland and Labrador. Its page lists ponds to swim, fish and paddle, sandy beaches, a campground, trails, and a view over the water from the top of Butter Pot Hill. A place to spend time, not a quick stop.

Stopping here adds 6.3 km to the drive.

  2. Stop 2: Sandy PondDetour

One of the park's officially designated observing sites under its Dark-Sky Preserve status: the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada designated Terra Nova on 26 February 2018, and Parks Canada's own night-sky page calls Sandy Pond the darkest skies in the park. RASC notes the designated sites have paved parking with a walk to the observing spot. The pond also has a beach and a trail for daytime. After dark, the drive back to the highway is moose country.

Stopping here adds 4.8 km to the drive.

  3. Stop 3: Joey's Lookout

A mapped viewpoint on the Trans-Canada east of Gander, effectively on the road. OpenStreetMap records only the name and that it is a viewpoint. It is easy to miss at highway speed.

  4. Stop 4: Square Pond

A pond-side stop beside the Trans-Canada. OpenStreetMap still uses its old provincial-park name; the province no longer lists it. A place to stretch your legs.

  5. Stop 5: Silent Witnesses MemorialDetour

A memorial on Route 1 outside Gander, unveiled in 1990 for the lives lost in the Arrow Air crash of 12 December 1985. An American soldier stands atop a rock holding the hands of a civilian boy and girl, each child carrying an olive branch for the Screaming Eagles' peacekeeping mission in the Sinai; they were going home for Christmas. The trio look toward Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where a similar statue looks back.

Stopping here adds 2.4 km to the drive.

  6. Stop 6: Jonathan's Pond Provincial Park

A Provincial Park Reserve on Route 330 north of Gander, a short way off the road. ParksNL classes reserves as former camping parks whose campground was privatised before 1997, with no visitor services.

Stopping here adds 1.3 km to the drive.

Before you go

These change, so we link to the people who keep them up to date.

  • Is the boat actually running today?Check on the day, every time

A schedule says when a sailing is meant to go, not whether it is going. Wind, ice and mechanical trouble cancel these runs. The province publishes live ferry status separately; open it the morning you travel.

The province's notice on the ferry page states that vehicles travelling to Change Islands are loaded first, and encourages them to arrive thirty minutes before departure. The deck fills, and the next sailing may not call at Change Islands.

The province states that the likelihood of injury in a moose collision is twice as high between dusk and dawn as in daytime. This is 419.1 km, much of it unlit two-lane highway, and often driven early or late to meet a boat.

Renting a car? Book the car when you book the flight.

Summer rentals sell out, says NL Tourism, and in June 2026 BNN Bloomberg reported St. John's airport agencies booked for nearly all of summer.

Arriving without a car

Not renting? Here's who St. John's International Airport Authority lists at the terminal.

Rideshare: it depends who you ask.

The Airport Authority's own ground-transportation pages name City Wide Taxi as “the exclusive provider of ground transportation services for the public” and do not mention rideshare anywhere. Uber publishes pickup instructions for YYT, and the Airport's own account welcomed Uber in 2024. Both are true. The Authority's pages govern the kerb, so check them on the day.

  • Taxi

City Wide Taxi, which the Airport Authority names as the exclusive provider for the public. Cabs queue outside the Arrivals area and a dispatcher is there to help. The Authority publishes preset fares to named hotels and a meter-plus-surcharge rate everywhere else.

    (709) 722-7777

  • Public transit

Metrobus route 14 runs between the airport and the St. John's metro region, including Memorial University. There are two stops at the airport: one near the arrivals area, and one on World Parkway by the Holiday Inn Express. The Authority says Metrobus has committed to a wheelchair-accessible service on this route and can take large, non-folding mobility aids. Schedule and fares are Metrobus's.

Questions

How do I get to Change Islands from St. John's airport?+

Drive to the Farewell ferry terminal, 419.1 km on Routes 40, 1, 330, 331 and 335, then take the ferry. Change Islands is the first call on that run, before Fogo Island.

Is it the same ferry as Fogo Island?+

Not always. The service can run more than one vessel on separate schedules, and some Farewell–Fogo sailings do not call at Change Islands. Take whichever boat is next and you may end up on Fogo. Find a sailing that stops at Change Islands and confirm it for your travel day.

Can I combine Change Islands and Fogo in one trip?+

Sometimes. The province publishes some sailings that run Farewell to Change Islands to Fogo Island as one chain, depending on which schedule and vessel are in service. Confirm the specific sailings before planning a day around it.

Do I need a car?+

You need one to reach Farewell. Taking it across is optional: the boat lands in the community and the island is small, so foot passengers are not stranded at a wharf.
