The odds on this site come from the count of bergs crossing 48°N, out in the shipping lanes. These are the ones the same patrol recorded near Farewell ferry terminal itself, across 19 seasons (2002–2021), counted as distinct icebergs rather than sightings.
At least one was recorded within 50 km in 19 of those 19 seasons. The middling season brought 42; the heaviest, 182 in 2009. Widen to 100 km and the middling season is 185.
This is not what you would see from the shore. It is where a patrol whose job is shipping recorded ice, so where they looked shapes it, and a berg 50 km out to sea is not a berg in the harbour. Busy Bee Cabs, which the Airport Authority says runs a 24-hour service available curbside in the Domestic Arrivals area.
Coach
DRL Coachlines runs the island's one scheduled coach, once a day each way, between St. John's and the Marine Atlantic terminal at Port aux Basques. It stops at Gander Airport itself (the restaurant), and at Lewisporte, Grand Falls-Windsor, Deer Lake and Corner Brook among others. It reaches no island and no national park. Tickets are bought on the bus, cash only. The Airport Authority says a wheelchair-accessible bus needs 48 hours' notice. Times and fares are DRL's: drl-lr.com.

How do I get to Change Islands from Gander Airport?＋
Drive to the Farewell ferry terminal, 86.3 km on Routes 330, 331 and 335, then take the ferry. Change Islands is the first call on that run, before Fogo Island.
Is it the same ferry as Fogo Island?＋
Not always. The service can run more than one vessel on separate schedules, and some Farewell–Fogo sailings do not call at Change Islands. Take whichever boat is next and you may end up on Fogo. Find a sailing that stops at Change Islands and confirm it for your travel day.
Can I combine Change Islands and Fogo in one trip?＋
Sometimes. The province publishes some sailings that run Farewell to Change Islands to Fogo Island as one chain, depending on which schedule and vessel are in service. Confirm the specific sailings before planning a day around it.
How do I plan the day I fly home?＋
Backwards from check-in. The drive back to Gander is the same 86 km, but there is a crossing and a vehicle queue before it, boarding is not reserved, and a missed sailing can cost you the flight. Leave more slack than the distance suggests.
Do I need a rental car?＋
You need one to reach Farewell. Taking it across is optional: unlike Fogo, the boat lands in the community and the island is small, so foot passengers are not stranded at a wharf.
