Then a ferry to Change Islands

Not every Fogo-bound boat stops here. The province publishes separate schedules for separate vessels, and some Farewell–Fogo sailings go straight to Fogo. Find a sailing that stops here in the current schedule before you plan around it.

Operated by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Faded lines are other drives from Port aux Basques ferry terminal into this area: Farewell ferry terminal (609 km), Twillingate (627 km), Comfort Cove-Newstead (570 km), Musgrave Harbour (661 km). Each splits off where its line leaves this one.

  1. Stop 1: Wreckhouse

The most famous stretch of wind in Newfoundland. The Long Range funnels southeasterlies here hard enough that a man was once employed to decide whether trains could pass: Lauchie MacDougall, the human wind gauge. The Trans-Canada runs straight through it, and high-sided vehicles still get held when it blows. Check the forecast for your timing.

Stopping here adds 0.2 km to the drive.

  2. Stop 2: Indian River

A green space mapped essentially on the driven line. OpenStreetMap records it as a nature reserve but not who runs it, and it is not on ParksNL's list. Treat it as a place to pull over, not somewhere with facilities.

Stopping here adds 0.1 km to the drive.

  3. Stop 3: Loggers' Life Provincial MuseumDetour

A reconstructed 1920s logging camp on the west side of Grand Falls-Windsor, mapped right beside the driven line. Central Newfoundland ran on the woods for a century, and the museum shows that work.

Stopping here adds 4.6 km to the drive.

  4. Stop 4: Mary March Provincial Museum (Beothuk Interpretation Centre), Grand Falls-Windsor

A few hundred metres off the Trans-Canada in Grand Falls-Windsor. It tells the story of the Beothuk and of central Newfoundland's interior.

Stopping here adds 0.6 km to the drive.

  5. Stop 5: The nordic trails east of townDetour

6.7 km of mapped cross-country ski trail in the woods off the Trans-Canada, just east of Grand Falls-Windsor. The club running them is not named on the map; ask locally about grooming and season. The weather strip above says whether there is snow.

Stopping here adds 2.8 km to the drive.

  6. Stop 6: Upper Falls Lookout

One of three viewpoints mapped together beside the Trans-Canada at the Norris Arm junction. It is the upper waterfall lookout on the Eel Brook Trail, a short walk past Eel Brook's falls: AllTrails lists it at about 1.3 miles out and back, with Lower Falls Lookout as the other viewpoint.

Stopping here adds 2 km to the drive.

  • Is the boat actually running today?Check on the day, every time

A schedule says when a sailing is meant to go, not whether it is going. Wind, ice and mechanical trouble cancel these runs. The province publishes live ferry status separately; open it the morning you travel.

Questions

How do I get to Change Islands from the Port aux Basques ferry terminal?+

Drive to the Farewell ferry terminal, 609.1 km on Routes 1, 340, 331 and 335, then take the ferry. Change Islands is the first call on that run, before Fogo Island.

Is it the same ferry as Fogo Island?+

Not always. The service can run more than one vessel on separate schedules, and some Farewell–Fogo sailings do not call at Change Islands. Take whichever boat is next and you may end up on Fogo. Find a sailing that stops at Change Islands and confirm it for your travel day.

Can I combine Change Islands and Fogo in one trip?+

Sometimes. The province publishes some sailings that run Farewell to Change Islands to Fogo Island as one chain, depending on which schedule and vessel are in service. Confirm the specific sailings before planning a day around it.

Do I need a car?+

You need one to reach Farewell. Taking it across is optional: the boat lands in the community and the island is small, so foot passengers are not stranded at a wharf.
