OpenStreetMap maps this as historic ruins, and the name carries the rest: the airport settlement that stood beside the runways before the present townsite existed. The Town of Gander's own history page states that after the war the airport reverted to civilian control, efforts began to move residents a safe distance from the runways, construction began in the 1950s on the present townsite, and the municipality was incorporated in 1958 and the airport settlement was abandoned. This is a detour taken at the very start of the drive rather than a stop along it.
