Conservative model estimate, Gander International Airport (YQX) to Clarenville — no stops, dry roads. Many of Newfoundland's provincial routes carry no speed limit in the open map data, so the router assumes a slow default: a driver who knows the road will beat this. Source: OSRM driving profile, Gander International Airport (YQX) to Clarenville, checked 2026-09-05, re-checked 2026-09-21.

From Gander this is a short run: Route 330 south out of the airport onto the Trans-Canada, then the Trans-Canada the rest of the way to Clarenville. At 117 minutes it is the closest of the three airport doors — St. John’s is not far behind at about 148, and Deer Lake is a different order of drive entirely.

What breaks the drive up sits at the Gander end rather than along it: the mapped ruins of the airport settlement that stood before Gander’s present townsite was built, a memorial to the Arrow Air crash, and a viewpoint on the Trans-Canada a little under a third of the way along. After that it is highway.

Worth stopping for

  1. Gander Old Town SiteDetour

OpenStreetMap maps this as historic ruins, and the name carries the rest: the airport settlement that stood beside the runways before the present townsite existed. The Town of Gander's own history page states that after the war the airport reverted to civilian control, efforts began to move residents a safe distance from the runways, construction began in the 1950s on the present townsite, and the municipality was incorporated in 1958 and the airport settlement was abandoned. This is a detour taken at the very start of the drive rather than a stop along it.

Stopping here adds about 6 min and 3.6 km to the drive.

navigate: Organic · OsmAnd · Apple · Google · Waze
  2. Silent Witnesses MemorialDetour

A memorial on Route 1 outside Gander, near the start of this drive. The province's own tourism listing calls it a tranquil park, unveiled in 1990, dedicated to the lives lost in the Arrow Air crash of December 12, 1985. It describes an American soldier standing atop a massive rock holding the hands of a civilian boy and girl, each child holding an olive branch for the peacekeeping mission of the Screaming Eagles in the Sinai, who were going home for Christmas; the trio look to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where a similar statue looks back. That listing also carries a season for the site — those dates are the province's to state, not this page's.

Stopping here adds about 8 min and 2.4 km to the drive.

navigate: Organic · OsmAnd · Apple · Google · Waze
  3. Joey's Lookout

A mapped viewpoint on the Trans-Canada, a little under a third of the way along and effectively on the road. OpenStreetMap records the name and the fact that it is a viewpoint, and nothing else — it is easy to miss at highway speed.

Stopping here adds about 1 min and 0.1 km to the drive.

Why it matters: Hertz Canada’s published rental terms — the one set of Canadian rental terms we could read in full, quoted not recommended — list “use off paved roads or on roads which are not regularly maintained” as misconduct that voids the damage waiver. Read the agreement you sign before leaving the lot. The terms themselves. Source for these figures: OSRM driving profile, stored route query, with node annotations; OpenStreetMap surface tags via Overpass, checked 2026-09-06. A road with no tag is unknown, not paved; what any road is like today is on 511.

Eating on the way — measured, not recommended

47 places to eat that the open map data records within 2 km of this drive, in the order you would pass them. No stars, no prices, no opinions, and no opening hours — distance along the road is the one thing measured here that a directory cannot give you.

The longest stretch with nothing mapped on it is 38.6 km — after Happy Adventure Cafe, until Snack shack.. That is the figure worth planning around.

What this list is not

  • Not a recommendation. Nothing here is endorsed, reviewed or rated. It is in the order you drive past it.
  • Not complete. Somewhere unmapped does not appear. This is never "all of them".
  • Not open hours. We publish none, because the open data holds none. Never assume a kitchen is serving.
  • Not necessarily still trading. A place that closed stays in the data until somebody removes it.
  • Not for sale. No one can pay to appear here, to rank higher, or to have a rival removed.

Open map data is incomplete — somewhere unmapped does not appear here, and this is never "all of them" or "the good ones". A place that closed is also still on the map until somebody removes it, which is why no hours are shown and nothing here says a kitchen is open. From OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps (which includes data from Meta, Foursquare and AllThePlaces); swept 2026-09-12. Map the one that is missing → and every site built on the open map gains it, this one included.

Before you go

These change. We link the people who keep them current rather than copying numbers that go stale here.

  • MooseYear round, worst between dusk and dawn

The province states the likelihood of injury in a moose collision is about twice as high between dusk and dawn as in daytime. Almost the whole of this drive is two-lane highway — Route 330 out of Gander, then the Trans-Canada — with long unlit stretches between communities, so an evening arrival at the airport is worth planning around.

  • Road conditionsYear round, matters most November–April

Route 330 out of the airport is short, and the rest of this drive is the Trans-Canada, the main road across the island, so it is paved, well travelled and well maintained. It still runs through open country between communities and sees real winter weather. Check conditions before leaving the airport.

Arriving without a car

Every distance and time on this page is a drive. If you are not renting, here is what Gander International Airport Authority lists at this door — operators and numbers, not fares: a tariff is theirs to change, so it is linked and not copied.

No rideshare here.

No rideshare service is named anywhere on the Airport Authority's transport page. That is an absence read off the page on 2026-09-15, not an assumption — but it is the Authority's page, not a licensing register, so it says what the airport lists rather than what is legal.

  • Taxi

Busy Bee Cabs, which the Airport Authority says runs a 24-hour service available curbside in the Domestic Arrivals area.

    (709) 256-1444

  • Coach

DRL Coachlines runs a scheduled coach service across Newfoundland. The Airport Authority says a wheelchair-accessible bus needs 48 hours' notice.

    (888) 263-1852

  • Limousine

Nobel Limousines, listed by the Airport Authority.

    (709) 535-2457

Avis, Budget, National and Enterprise are listed at the airport. The Authority says accessible vehicles with wheelchair accommodation or hand controls are limited and need 48 hours' notice.

Questions people actually ask

How far is Clarenville from Gander Airport?

About 147 km — roughly 1 hour 57 minutes. You take Route 330 south out of the airport to the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1), then follow the Trans-Canada the rest of the way to Clarenville.

Should I fly into St. John's, Gander or Deer Lake for Clarenville?

For Clarenville, Gander is the closest of the three — about 117 minutes. St. John's is not far behind at around 148 minutes, so it is a reasonable choice if your trip already has you landing there or starting on the Avalon Peninsula. Deer Lake is a different order of drive, at around 345 minutes, and only makes sense if Clarenville is a stop on a longer west-to-east trip.

Is the drive from Gander to Clarenville a hard one?

No — it is paved the whole way and it is the main road between the two, so it is well travelled. It is mostly two-lane highway between communities, which is why the moose note above is the one thing worth planning around, especially on an evening arrival.

Is there anywhere worth stopping on the way?

Three spots, and all of them sit at the Gander end. The Gander Old Town Site is mapped as the ruins of the airport settlement that stood before the present townsite was built. The Silent Witnesses Memorial marks the lives lost in the Arrow Air crash of December 12, 1985. Joey's Lookout is a mapped viewpoint effectively on the Trans-Canada. Past those, the drive is highway.
