The Society's own site dates the area's history of occupation to the 1500s, and records Placentia as a capital for the French in Newfoundland from 1662 to 1713, and the English, who also used it as their capital — the town the Society calls the ancient French capital. It states that the museum opens for the summer tourist season and sometimes longer, so check with them before planning a visit around a date.
