Then a ferry to Blanc-Sablon, Quebec — and the Labrador coastal road

The crossing of the Strait of Belle Isle lands at Blanc-Sablon on the Quebec side, just short of the Labrador border, and Red Bay is up the coastal road from there. Labrador Marine Inc. takes the reservations. The province runs a different timetable at different times of year and says ice can lengthen a crossing, so book the sailing first and build the drive around it.

Operated by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

299.2 km. Deer Lake airport to the St. Barbe ferry terminal on Route 430, the Viking Trail: Gros Morne first, then coast, barrens and the occasional community.

Check the boat before you leave. The ferry crosses to Labrador, with Red Bay up the coastal road from the landing. Its schedule changes by season and with ice, and missing it costs a day.

New place to eat, or one that's missing? This list comes from OpenStreetMap, so nobody can pay to be on it. Add it to the map yourself (about twenty minutes on a phone), or email us the details and we'll put it on the map.

No fast charger at St. Barbe ferry terminal. From Cow Head it is 183 km there and the same back: plan on about 366 km on one charge, more in cold weather or with the heat on. Or charge at Flowers Cove, 20.9 km from St. Barbe ferry terminal by road, off this drive's own road.

Across the water: no fast charger on Blanc-Sablon, Quebec — and the Labrador coastal road. The nearest is Flowers Cove, 32 km from the island terminal in a straight line, on the mainland. Leave full: your charge has to cover the island, the ferry queue and the drive back.

Before you go

These change, so we link to the people who keep them up to date.

  • The sailingThe schedule changes through the year

The province publishes a different timetable by season and states that difficult ice conditions may increase crossing times. Missing a sailing leaves you at the end of a 299 km drive, so confirm it before you set out.

    Check it now →
  • MooseYear round, worst between dusk and dawn

The province puts the likelihood of injury in a moose collision at twice as high between dusk and dawn as in daylight. Route 430 is long, unlit and thinly travelled.

    Check it now →
  • Road conditionsYear round, most of all November to April

The Northern Peninsula takes weather off the Gulf on one side and the Strait on the other. Check 511 before you set out on the 430, and again before the drive back.

Renting a car? Book the car when you book the flight.

Summer rentals sell out, says NL Tourism, and in June 2026 CTV reported St. John's airport agencies booked for nearly all of summer.

Both read 2026-10-07.

Arriving without a car

Not renting? Here's who Deer Lake Regional Airport lists at the door. Fares change, so we link to them instead.

No rideshare here.

The airport's ground-transportation page lists no rideshare service, only three taxi firms, a shuttle and seven charter operators (checked 2026-09-15).

  • Taxi

Star Taxi, which the airport calls its primary ground transportation provider, serving the whole region with wheelchair-accessible vans and accommodating service dogs. The airport advises contacting them 24 to 48 hours before you arrive.

  • Taxi

Deer Lake Taxi, listed as operating around the clock across the province with no pre-booking required.

    (709) 635-0000

  • Shuttle

Star Taxi runs a shuttle between Corner Brook and the airport, serving named hotels, with a private-car option. It must be booked ahead. The airport publishes the fares.

    (709) 634-4343

  • Coach

DRL Coachlines' once-a-day coach each way between St. John's and Port aux Basques stops in Deer Lake town (the Circle K), not at the airport terminal. It reaches no island and no national park. Tickets are bought on the bus, cash only. Times and fares are DRL's: drl-lr.com.

The drive back

Measured the other way, St. Barbe ferry terminal back to Deer Lake is the same distance: 300 km.

Plan back from your check-in time. Going home, the ferry comes first: confirm the sailing, then count back. Give the planner your flight time and it tells you when to set off.

Questions people actually ask

Does this drive reach Labrador?+

No, it reaches the ferry. The figure above ends at the St. Barbe slip. The crossing lands at Blanc-Sablon in Quebec, just short of the Labrador border, and the coastal road carries on from there.

How long is the crossing?+

The timetable changes with the season and with ice, so check the province's schedule, linked above.

Is this the way to Red Bay?+

Yes. Red Bay is the 16th-century Basque whaling station on the Labrador side of the Strait, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it sits up the coastal road from Blanc-Sablon. The guide to UNESCO sites covers it; this page is the drive to the crossing.

Am I already going this way for L'Anse aux Meadows?+

Nearly. The Viking site is further up the same Route 430, so St. Barbe is on the way, and the two trips share most of a drive. L'Anse aux Meadows has its own page.
