Free-flow estimate, Gander International Airport (YQX) to Grand Falls-Windsor — no stops, dry roads.Source: OSRM driving profile, terminal door to town centre, checked 2026-08-31.
Grand Falls-Windsor is the town people drive through. It sits an hour and a quarter from Gander airport on the Trans-Canada, it is the largest place between the two airports, and nothing about it is why anyone flies to Newfoundland.
It earns a page for a duller reason: it is the nearest place to the middle of this region where you can assume a pharmacy, a garage and a staffed hotel. On a coast where most of what we cover is seasonal, that is worth knowing.

MooseYear round, worst between dusk and dawn
The province states that the likelihood of injury in a moose collision is twice as high between dusk and dawn as in daytime. This is Trans-Canada the whole way, which means highway speed for the full 98 km.

Questions people actually ask
How long is the drive from Gander Airport to Grand Falls-Windsor?+
About 1 hour 17 minutes, covering 98.3 km, entirely on the Trans-Canada Highway. It is the simplest drive on this site — one road, no turns, no ferry.
Why would I go there rather than the coast?+
Because it is the largest town between the two airports and the only one on this site where you can assume things are open. If you are arriving late, travelling in the off-season, or need a pharmacy, a garage or a hotel that is definitely staffed, this is the nearest place that reliably has them.
Should I fly into Gander or Deer Lake?+
Gander, and comfortably: 1 hour 17 against 2 hours 42 from Deer Lake. It sits closer to the Gander end of the Trans-Canada than the middle.
Is it a base for the coast?+
It can be, though it is inland and everything scenic is north of it. Lewisporte is 53 minutes from Grand Falls-Windsor and closer to the water; the bases guide compares the coastal options properly. Grand Falls-Windsor is the answer when services matter more than views.
