Where to see icebergs near Gander
Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism publishes a list of the more popular places to watch icebergs from, and three of the names on it — Twillingate, Fogo Island and Change Islands — sit within a couple of hours of Gander airport. What the list does not tell you is how to get to any of them from the plane you just got off.
That is the whole of this page. Where the province says to go, how far each one is from the terminal door, and the one link worth checking before you drive anywhere: whether there is actually anything out there this week.
We are missing one thing here, and it is worth saying out loud: we have no photograph that shows how big these are. If you have one — a boat beside a berg, a berg past a headland — we would like it, credited.
Where to go, and how to get there
Twillingate
The shortest drive of the four and the one most people mean when they say they are going to see icebergs. Shore viewing and boat tours both operate from here.

Fogo Island
Reached by ferry from Farewell, which makes it the most planning-dependent of the four. If the bergs are the whole reason for the trip, check sightings before you commit to a sailing.

On the same ferry service as Fogo Island, and much quieter. Not every sailing calls here — some cross straight to Fogo — so read the schedule rather than assuming.

La Scie
The furthest north of the four, out on the Baie Verte Peninsula, and the only one we have no route page for yet. It is a trip in its own right rather than a day out from Gander.
323.7 km and about 4h28 from Gander airport — but only 208.3 km and about 3h01 from Deer Lake. If La Scie is the destination, fly into YDF.

When is iceberg season in Newfoundland?＋
The province's own guidance is that April and May are when bergs are most plentiful, but that they may be locked up in sea ice then, so late May and early June are suggested for best viewing. There is no date you can book against — presence varies year to year and week to week.
Where are the best places to see icebergs near Gander?＋
Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism names Twillingate, Fogo Island and Change Islands among the more popular viewing places from shore or by tour boat, and all three are within reach of Gander airport. La Scie is also on their list but is a much longer drive, and closer to Deer Lake than to Gander.
Can I plan a trip around seeing an iceberg?＋
Not around a date, no. The province is direct about it: icebergs are unpredictable. What you can do is pick a window in late spring, check IcebergFinder for current sightings once you are here, and be willing to drive to whichever of these places has something in front of it that week. Every one of them is a good day out regardless.
Which airport should I fly into for icebergs?＋
Gander, for three of the four places listed here — Twillingate is under two hours away, and the Fogo ferry terminal is 1 hour 21. La Scie is the exception: it is about 4h28 from Gander but around 3h from Deer Lake.
