Where to base yourself for icebergs and Fogo
Every accommodation listing in this region will tell you it is well placed. So we measured it: four plausible bases, each routed to the two things people actually come for — the icebergs at Twillingate and the Farewell ferry for Fogo Island.
The result is not the one a tourism page would print. The best-placed spot has almost nowhere to stay, and the obvious base comes third on drive time. Both of those are worth knowing before you book, and neither makes any of these a bad choice — they just make the choice yours rather than someone’s marketing.
One correction we had to make ourselves: Lewisporte’s “Gateway to the North” is often read as a claim about reaching the islands. It isn’t. The town was the base for coastal Labrador shipping for decades, and that is where the name comes from — the service that gave it the moniker ran north, not out to Twillingate, and no longer runs from there at all.
One caveat on our own figures: the Twillingate and Boyd’s Cove endpoints are OpenStreetMap elements, named on each card. Boyd’s Cove is measured at the Beothuk Interpretation Centre rather than at a town centre, because that is what OSM has there.

The shortest worst-case drive of the four — neither leg is longer than 44 minutes — though Twillingate is lower on the two legs added together. The reason it is not the answer is that there is almost nowhere to sleep. OpenStreetMap records exactly one place to stay within 12 km: the Dildo Run Provincial Park campsite. If you are camping, this is the shortest driving of anywhere here. If you are not, it is a lunch stop.

Twillingate
You are already at the icebergs, which is the whole point for most people, and the town has real accommodation and food. The cost is the ferry: an hour and five minutes to Farewell, each way, on any Fogo day.

Lewisporte
Third on drive time, and still often the right answer. It beats the airport to both draws — 22 minutes closer to Twillingate, 12 to the ferry — and it is a working town with services and a harbour, which Boyd's Cove is not. If you want one base with somewhere to eat and a marina to look at, this is it.

Worst-placed of the four for these two draws, and people still do it because the flights land here. If your trip is one day out and back, the convenience may win. For anything longer you are paying an hour a day for it.

Questions people actually ask
What is the single best base?＋
There isn't one, which is why this page is a table rather than a recommendation. Boyd's Cove has the shortest single worst leg and almost nowhere to sleep; Twillingate is lower if you add the two legs together. Twillingate wins if icebergs are the trip and you are not going to Fogo. Lewisporte wins if you want one base with a town's services and a shorter drive than the airport gives you. Gander wins only on the convenience of not moving after you land.
Isn't Lewisporte supposed to be the gateway?＋
To somewhere else, and to a service that no longer runs from there. Lewisporte's moniker is "Gateway to the North", and it comes from the town's decades as the base for coastal Labrador shipping — not from access to Twillingate or Fogo. The freight operation was replaced in 2019 by a service out of Happy Valley-Goose Bay; the passenger link north ended earlier, though we have not found a date we are confident enough to print. Either way the nickname points north, not out to the islands, so measuring it against Twillingate was measuring the wrong thing.
So is Lewisporte a bad base?＋
No — it is third on drive time and still often the right answer. It beats the airport to both draws, by 22 minutes to Twillingate and 12 to the ferry, and it is a town with services and a harbour rather than a scattering of houses. For most visitors that matters more than twenty minutes of driving.
How were these measured?＋
Each base was routed to two fixed OpenStreetMap elements using the OSRM driving profile, on 2026-08-29: the Twillingate place node (node/107365649, which sits at Back Harbour on the north edge of the town rather than at its centre) and the Farewell ferry terminal (node/1598423285). Bases are measured at the elements named on each card — Boyd's Cove at the Beothuk Interpretation Centre, Gander at the airport terminal. Differences of a few minutes between bases are inside the noise those endpoint choices introduce; differences of half an hour are not. Nothing here is an impression, and if a figure changes the page changes.
What if I only have one day?＋
Stay where you land and drive out and back. Twillingate is 1h48 from the airport, which is a long but reasonable day trip. Fogo is not — the ferry makes it a two-day trip at minimum, and trying it in one is how people miss sailings.
