Guide

The UNESCO sites, measured from the doors

The measured routes to the World Heritage sites in this guide — Gros Morne National Park, L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, Red Bay National Historic Site — drawn from Deer Lake (YDF) and St. John's (YYT).Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. Tiles by OpenFreeMap. Route line computed with OSRM.

No comparable island holds this much World Heritage this close together. From the Deer Lake door alone: the exposed mantle of the Tablelands within an hour, the Norse landfall at the road’s northern end, and the Basque whaling capital one ferry across the Strait. The fourth site — Mistaken Point’s Ediacaran sea floor, the oldest large fossils on Earth — waits on the Avalon for the day this site measures the St. John’s door.

The guide above cites each site’s mapped boundary and hands its seasons to Parks Canada, where they belong. The routes those sites hang off are measured to the minute; the pilgrimage is yours to pace.

Where to go, and how to get there

  • Gros Morne National Park

World Heritage for the rocks themselves: the Tablelands are the Earth's mantle lying in the open, the geology that helped prove plate tectonics. The park holds this site's biggest measured trails — Gros Morne Mountain, Western Brook's rim, the Tablelands walk and its serious plateau traverse.

  • L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site

The only authenticated Norse site in North America — the sod halls at the island's northern tip where Europe first touched this continent, a thousand years ago. Parks Canada curates the ridge; the measured drive up Route 430 is a day's commitment and reads like a pilgrimage because it is one.

    YDF → L'Anse aux Meadows — 5h 51m, 436.4 km

  • Red Bay National Historic Site

The 16th-century Basque whaling station on the Labrador side of the Strait — chalupas, tryworks and a drowned galleon, curated by Parks Canada. It is the one World Heritage site this island's roads almost reach: the provincial ferry crosses from St. Barbe on Route 430 to Blanc-Sablon, and Red Bay is under an hour up the Labrador coastal road from the slip.

  • Sites and seasonsEach site sets its own — Parks Canada's pages are the source

Visitor centres, guided walks and hours at all three Parks Canada sites are seasonal and theirs to state. The landscapes hold their shape year-round; the interpretation does not.

  • The Strait crossing (for Red Bay)Seasonal service — the provincial schedule decides

The St. Barbe–Blanc-Sablon ferry is a provincial service with a seasonal rhythm and weather holds; an international-feeling crossing that is actually interprovincial. Confirm sailings before building Labrador into a day.

Questions people actually ask

How many UNESCO World Heritage sites does Newfoundland and Labrador hold?

Four: Gros Morne, L'Anse aux Meadows, Red Bay, and Mistaken Point — a density few regions anywhere can match. Three sit within this site's measured west; Mistaken Point is an Avalon drive and will be measured when this site turns to the St. John's door.

Can I do Gros Morne and L'Anse aux Meadows in one trip?

It is the classic west coast itinerary: the park about an hour from the Deer Lake door, then the Viking Trail north — Port au Choix's archaeology on the way — to the Norse site at the tip. Two World Heritage sites, one road, and the measured routes here carry every leg.

Is Red Bay really reachable by car?

Car plus one provincial ferry: drive Route 430 to St. Barbe, cross to Blanc-Sablon, and the Labrador coastal road delivers Red Bay in under an hour. The crossing's schedule is the province's to state and the honest constraint on the day.
